The Birth of Venus

oil on canvas, 70.5″ x 30″

According to Greco-Roman myth, there was once a violent happening in the divine womb of the sea, when the sky-god Ouranos was castrated by his angry son. In this tempestuous event, his testicles were hurled towards the earth, colliding into the womblike cauldron of the mother ocean. The goddess Venus emerged from the foam and washed ashore on the island of Cyprus, a full-grown woman, a divinity with no childhood, whose mother was the sea.

The concept, that very breathing, burgeoning, eternal idea-entity that is Venus pervades through the totality of the female nude, in every sacred space of femininity exposed through the predominantly masculine hand of the evolving Western canon.

The word Venus contains an erotic polysemic evolution. Through the Venusian, the feminine becomes a hermeneutic vessel, it becomes more than flesh, it becomes an idea, a tabula rasa, intimate to all; it becomes the breeding ground for divergent interpretations. Love and Lust become unified in one entity; it becomes human: it becomes symbol.

Venus like the historic feminine, and Nature, always existed for something outside of itself, outside of her own entity, for the sake of another, but now in the cyclic movement of thought, she is liberated, unbound from this created world as Prometheus never was. She moves for herself in the ambitious apogee of divinity, she finally is truly immortal, outliving the religion of her first conception, surviving through the rape of the Western Judeo-Christian machine, now existent eternally in a synthesized reality, perpetual in its self-creating celestial natures.
